Best Paper Awards 2013

Six best paper awards were assigned during the Symposium and delivered to recipients in occasion of the Gala Dinner.

Best Brazilian Paper Award
In occasion of the nomination of Brazil as Sardinia 2013 Special Guest Country, an award was given to the best paper by a Brazilian author.
Winner: ‘Geogrid mechanical damages due to recycled construction and demolition wastes’ by F.A.S. Barbosa and E.C.G. Santos (Polytechnic School of the University of Pernambuco, Brazil)

Luigi Mendia Award
Award for the best paper on waste management policy
In memory of Professor Luigi Mendia, University of Naples, one of the firts scientists to begin the research in the field of Sanitary Engineering in Italy.
2013 Winner: ‘Ways and entanglements of the waste hierarchy’ by A. Bartl (Vienna University of Technology, Austria)

Kriton Curi Award
Award for the best paper on developing country waste management issues
In memory of Professor Kriton Kuri, Bogazici University, Istanbul, one of the main international experts in appropriate technologies for waste management in developing countries.
2013 Winner: ‘A close view of waste management in Africa: the ‘Africa and its derivates’ project’ by M.C. Lavagnolo and S. Failli (University of Padova, Italy)

Giovanni Bozzini Award
Best Italian paper award
In memory of Professor Giovanni Bozzini, University of Pavia, one of the Italian pioneers in the waste management research.
2013 Winner: ‘Biological hydrogen and methane productions from organic fractions of MSW with different composition’ by L. Alibardi and R. Cossu (University of Padova, Italy)

Alberto Rozzi Award
Award for the best paper on biological treatment 
In memory of Alberto Rozzi, Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Milan, one of international leading researchers on anaerobic digestion.
2013 Winner: ‘Enhacing methane production during two-phase anaerobic digestion of food waste by reutilizing hydrogen and carbon dioxide produced in acidogenic leach bed reactor’ by B. Yan, A. Selvam and J.W.C. Wong (Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong - China)

Best Poster Award
A poster presentation is a high effective medium for a direct communication with all interested delegates on specific topics. Posters are evaluated on the base of the quality of the contents reported and the quality of visual presention itself.
2013 Winner: ‘Plasma technology for the abatement of pollutants emitted by mechanical-biological treatment plants’ by M. Ragazzi, E.C. Rada, V. Torretta and M. Schiavon (University of Trento, Italy)
