Closing Session

ROLE OF DIFFERENT WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Chair: Rainer Stegmann, Hamburg University of Technology (DE)

The action plan for a circular economy released by the European Union involves a “transition to a more circular economy, where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and the generation of waste is minimized…”
Waste management may play a central role in this framework and contribute to the development of a sustainable and resource-efficient economy.

During the Round Table the outcomes of several symposium sessions and workshops on waste management and the circular economy will be summarized and discussed, with specific emphasis on:

• Influence of circular economy action plans on waste management practices
• Perspectives in valorization of specific waste streams and utilization of secondary resources
• Integration of education and research towards circular economy thinking
• Chemicals and circular economy
• Role of landfilling in closing the material cycles
