IWWG Training Courses

Four IWWG Training Courses were arranged in 2015 under the supervision of leading international experts prior to the opening of the Symposium. 

IWWG Training course on Assessment of Biological Reactivity of Wastes 
The course will be organized by Erwin Binner (BOKU, AT)

This course will focus on the actual situation in Austria and Germany. The first chapter will be devoted to “Why/where do we need knowledge about waste reactivity”, while the second one will deal with “Methods for assessment of Biological Reactivity of Wastes” and the third will focus on “Interpretation of Reactivity Tests”. 
IWWG Training course on the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) - h. 11.00 - 13.00
The course will be jointly organized by Stefan Salhofer (BOKU, AT), member of the IWWG Scientific Advisory Panel and leader of the IWWG task group on WEEE, together with Julia Hobohm (Hamburg University of Technology, DE), co-leader of the same task group.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has received attention as a secondary resource. The consumption of most advanced models leads to short lifespan of electrical and electronic equipment. A direct consequence is the increasing quantity of WEEE. In Europe the management of WEEE is regulated by European Directives.
The IWWG course will provide a comprehensive overview on the collection system in Europe, the management outside Europe shall be discussed in the session regard to future perspectives on WEEE generation, treatment, prevention and regulation. Additionally, the different challenges in management of WEEE in the countries/regions shall be introduced and discusses by the participants. 
IWWG Training course on aftercare of landfills
The course will be organized by Marco Ritzkowski (Hamburg University of Technology, DE), IWWG Managing Director and leader of the IWWG task group landfill aeration.

A great number of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills have been operated during the last century and closed after they have reached their final capacity. In Germany, many MSW landfills have been closed since 2005 in consequence of adaptations made to waste legislation. Today, a significant share of these closed landfills still emits landfill gas (LFG) and polluted leachate, caused by long term anaerobic biodegradation processes in combination with a lack of sufficient protection barriers.
This training course will address multiple issues related to landfill aftercare (technical measures for emission control, legal obligations, and methodologies for accelerated landfill bio-stabilization) with possibilities for discussion of specific aspects.
IWWG Training course on the treatment of leachate from landfills
The course will be organized by Howard Robinson (Phoenix Engineering, UK), member of the IWWG Managing Board.

Landfill leachate remains a very important potential source of water pollution from landfill sites, and its management is critical if contamination of surface and groundwaters is to be avoided. This IWWG training course will begin with detailed explanation of the main contaminants present in leachates from landfills in many different countries, and will demonstrate that the composition of leachates at large landfills containing household wastes is remarkably similar throughout the world, and not greatly affected by climate or even socio-economic factors.
